Comparison and Review of Different Tactical Pants

tactical pants
There is a psychological effect when you wear secure, sturdy clothes that you know will withstand any if not all damage while wearing them. It’s a fact that good clothes help build up an internal feeling of pride, as well as relaxes you from anxiety against wear and tear and dirt, depending on the clothes you wear.

Clothes are split into two distinctive parts, upper body and lower body, wear pants and shoes act as the outer covering, protecting you from your environment. It is imperative that you wear the right clothes for any activity, whether you are just going shopping, sitting in the park or climbing a mountain and jumping between obstacle to obstacle an urban warfare scenario.

When you think of tactical pants, you immediately think of soldiers and S.W.A.T. teams. However, tactical pants are as much for civilian use as they are for military or law enforcement purposes. In fact, tactical pants are designed for a lot of civilian purposes, including job-related to recreational. You can wear them on a day walk, work, or even on a shooting training (if you practicing with your air rifle).

Tactical pants come in a variety of sizes and colors, and also differ in design and pocket space. These designs will vary for different purposes, and the materials, pockets and overall structure will focus the use of each pant for some purposes.

The two most important parts of any tactical pant are the material it is made of and the stitching. The best tactical pants will have strong, wear resistant materials and extremely dense and reliable stitching.

Some pants are also coated with Teflon for that added stain resistant property, and the number of pockets, their sizes and placement also help to provide extra carrying space or in the case of less, easier running.

The following features are what make for the best tactical pants, so when you go and check out a pair, try a lot of different designs on until you find the pair that is both comfortable as well as functional.

  • Material: what is the material used, what percentage of materials in the mix?
  • Zippers/Buttons: does it use zipper or buttons or both, and if so, which zipper brand?
  • Pockets: how many pockets, what sizes, how are they places and how do they open and close?
  • Stitches: what stitching material is used and how tight is the stitch?
  • Waist Design: Is this a high or low waist design? How does it fit between your legs and how big are the belt straps?
  • Leg Design: is this wide or skinny? Does it flare or is it straight?
  • Width: are these pants wide enough to fit in easily and snug enough not to be baggy?
  • Length: do the pant ends touch the top of your feet or are they touching the floor with the extra material?

Pairing tactical pants to your body is an important affair. Since these pants must perform well for over 12 hours a day, they need to be comfortable as well as functional. They must also provide absolute security at work, you don’t want them to be too slim as to hinder your movement, or too baggy so that you constantly need to search for your pocket entrance.

You also want them to be snug and not too tight, nor too loose and capable of supporting any belt type, from a thick utility belt to a slim piece of rope. The end of the leggings should either be finished with a stitched seam or have a rope/elastic finish to allow them to fit snugly around your lower ankle.

Tactical pants are best used for the following purposes, and you should consider these functions per purpose when deciding which pair to buy:

  • General use: design, pocket space, durability.
  • Hiking/Hunting: durability, pocket space, thin or thick material (depending on the weather)
  • Mountain climbing: durability, pocket space and thin or thick material (depending on the weather)
  • Fishing or Waterlogged environments: waterproof, pockets and a tighter fit.
  • Security: lightweight (for pursuit), pocket space
  • Outdoor Work: durability, wear and tear, stain resistant, pocket space

Two major factors to consider weather and conditions. Are you going to wear them in hot climates or cold ones? Is it humid or dry? Are the conditions you are in hard, or soft? Soft is foliage and office, hard is urban or rocky.

There is no “perfect match” there is only the perfect match for you, based on your personal attraction to a specific design and material. Some people react to materials differently, so when you buy, don’t go into the shop with a focused approach that only Teflon coated, or only gray pants or only 16 pockets will suit you. You need to consider every aspect and adapt them to the situation you will be facing.

Also, consider what the material is and how your body feels when wearing it, the last thing you want is to buy “the best” tactical pants and end up itching till you rip them off in public…you get my meaning.

One final issue to consider, cleaning and ironing. How easy is it to clean the material and how easy is it to iron? Sure, you can always give them to local laundry service. However, that won’t solve the issue of cleaning where the material does not repel certain stains. So make sure you get a pair that is stain resistant or even stain repellant, as well as maintains its colors even after a daily wash.

8. Vertx Phantom Ops Airflow Pants

Its time to return to Vertx, and I will do so again. This company has winning tactical pants, and their Phantom Ops Airflo is by far the best for those hot climates or situations. These pants add an extra dimension to their Phantom Ops design.

At first, these pants might seem a bit tough and rigid, but after a few washes, they become nearly as light as 5.11 TacLite, which is saying enough. Airflow is a mesh design integrated into the pants that allow air to flow through them as you walk, increasing the internal flow of air and reducing heat.

The mesh in the cargo pockets will hinder some extra packing, so ease up on the mags when using these. The waist elastic inserts give you extra comfort, but if you conceal a lot of weaponry or devices in your waist, I suggest you buy a wider waist size to accommodate those items. These pants come with their proprietary IntelliDri™ coating that makes drying quicker when leaving wet (water) situations.

9. VertX Delta Stretch Men’s Pant

Where would I be without a pair of stretch pants, that looks so good on you bodybuilding dudes band gals? This is Vertx tactical pants for bulging muscles and wearers that want to look good when in pursuit.

They also offer extreme comfort with their skin hugging design and are perfect for any weather condition. These use the different material mix to the standard issues and provide extreme elasticity for best performance.

Actually, these are the pants for those fast sprinters and extreme pursuit officers, where you need the material to be tight, and not snagging when jumping over weird obstacles or balconies.

Unlike your standard tactical pants, these do not feature all the pockets you would expect since that would defeat the object of a stretch pant design. However, the tool pockets come leather lined for extra strength and protection for your body as well as articulated knees for extra mobility.
